Darwin, 06 July : Brazil paid a heavy price for a missed penalty in the first half as the five-time world champions suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Norway in a high-voltage FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash in New Jersey. The historic victory sent Norway into the quarter-finals for the first time in 36 years.
Erling Haaland scored twice for Norway, while Neymar netted a late consolation from the penalty spot for Brazil, reducing only the margin of defeat.
After a goalless first half, both sides resumed the second period cautiously. Brazil came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 59th minute when Vinícius Júnior played a superb through ball to substitute Endrick, who found himself unmarked inside the Norwegian penalty area. However, the young striker fired his weak effort wide of the post.
Three minutes later, Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland produced a brilliant save to deny a long-range strike from Brazil’s Rayan, keeping the score level.
Looking to inject fresh energy into the attack, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti introduced Neymar in place of Gabriel Martinelli in the 67th minute. Despite his arrival, Brazil struggled to create clear-cut chances.
The breakthrough finally came in the 79th minute. Substitute Andreas Schjelderup delivered a pinpoint cross from the left flank, and Norway captain Erling Haaland rose above defender Gabriel to power a magnificent header beyond goalkeeper Alisson, giving Norway a 1-0 lead. The goal also saw Haaland become the first European player to score in each of his first four World Cup matches.
As Brazil pushed desperately for an equaliser, Nyland once again came to Norway’s rescue in the 86th minute with an extraordinary save. Endrick’s effort deflected off a defender and looped toward the top corner, but the Norwegian goalkeeper raced backward and spectacularly caught the ball.
Haaland sealed the victory in the 90th minute. Once again set up by Schjelderup, the Manchester City striker controlled the ball beautifully inside the box before firing a low shot past Alisson to double Norway’s lead. The brace took Haaland’s tournament tally to seven goals, drawing level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
The match produced further drama deep into stoppage time. Frustrated by Brazil’s impending elimination, Neymar was booked in the 96th minute for fouling Martin Ødegaard.
Two minutes later, Norway defender Leo Østigård elbowed Casemiro inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award Brazil a penalty. Neymar converted from the spot in the 100th minute (90+10) to make it 2-1.
However, the goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation. Moments later, the final whistle confirmed Norway’s historic triumph, while Brazil crashed out of the Round of 16 for the first time in 36 years.
Norway will face either England or Mexico in the quarter-finals in Miami on July 6, while the five-time world champions head home after a disappointing campaign.
