Darwin, 15 October- Death toll has climbed to 16 in the horrific fire at a chemical warehouse in Rupnagar, Mirpur, Dhaka, official sources confirm.
According to Talha Bin Jasim, media officer at the Fire Service headquarters, 16 bodies have been recovered so far in the blaze. Initially, nine bodies were retrieved, and subsequently another seven.
Lieutenant Colonel (Operations & Maintenance) Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Director at the Fire Service, told reporters that all 16 bodies were found inside the building’s second and third floors, which included a garment factory. He added that the warehouse stored 6–7 different types of chemicals, which caused the fire to spread rapidly.
The fire broke out at 11:40 AM in the Shialbari area of Rupnagar, Mirpur. The building housed both a garment facility and a chemical warehouse.
Fire and Civil Defense units have mobilized more than a dozen teams to control the blaze. Due to heavy smoke and chemical hazards, entry into the building has been extremely difficult.
It is feared that some victims were unable to escape because of toxic fumes or by being trapped. Several people remain injured or burned, and three have been transferred to the National Burn Institute for treatment.
