Lionel Messi Hopes to Defend World Cup Title in 2026, Eyeing Record Sixth Appearance 🇦🇷

LOS ANGELES — Soccer superstar Lionel Messi has voiced his profound desire to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer across North America, a move that would see him become the first man in history to play in six World Cup tournaments.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who turns 39 during the competition, made it clear in an interview with NBC News that his final decision will rest solely on his physical condition.

“I am going to assess that on a day-to-day basis when I start the preseason next year with Inter [Miami] and see if I can really be 100%, if I can be useful to the group,” Messi said.

Messi is motivated by the extraordinary opportunity to defend the title he helped Argentina secure in 2022 after a thrilling final against France in Qatar—a victory he called the “dream of my life.”

“I’m really eager because it’s the World Cup. We’re coming off winning the last World Cup and being able to defend it on the field again is spectacular,” the Argentine captain explained.

This renewed motivation contrasts with his earlier sentiment following Argentina’s qualification in September, when he suggested his age made a 2026 appearance unlikely. However, his strong current form for Inter Miami has bolstered his hope, having recorded an impressive 42 goals and 20 assists in 2025.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star, who has scored 114 goals for his country since his debut in 2005, insists on self-honesty as his main guide.

“When I feel good, I enjoy it, but when I don’t, honestly, I don’t have a good time, so I prefer not to be there if I don’t feel good,” he stated.

His evaluation during the upcoming Inter Miami preseason will be the critical litmus test that determines whether the legendary forward graces the pitch for one final international defense.
