Darwin, 10 November-

Former Queensland Police Union president and Cross-Border Commissioner Ian Leavers has died.
The 57-year-old was found dead at his home in Mount Ommaney, Brisbane, on Monday morning. Police arrived at the scene around 9:50 a.m. and confirmed his death.

Authorities said the incident is not being treated as suspicious, though investigations are ongoing.

Leavers joined the Queensland Police Service in 1989 and served in various departments, including the Criminal Investigation Branch and the Child Protection Unit.

In 2009, he became the general president and CEO of the Queensland Police Union, and in 2021 he was elected president of the Australian Police Federation. He held both positions until stepping down last year.

During a speech in Canberra on Monday, current Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior paid an emotional tribute.

“At the time of the Wieambilla tragedy, Ian’s compassion showed his true character — a man who carried the pain of others and turned it into unity and strength,” Prior said.

He added, “Ian’s legacy lives on in every safety reform, every protection achieved, and in every officer who feels just a little more supported because of his work.”

Queensland Police Minister Dan Purdie described Leavers as “a brave and fearless advocate,” saying, “He never hesitated to speak up for what he believed was right. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”

Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said, “Ian led with purpose and unwavering commitment. His passing will be deeply felt across the organisation.”

He added, “I had the privilege of working with Ian for many years and hold him in the highest regard both personally and professionally.”

National Party leader David Littleproud said, “Ian was a symbol of courage and conviction. He played a vital role in shaping the national firearms registry and always fought for the police and the community.”

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said in a statement, “Ian was dedicated, principled, and determined to make a difference in society. He always spoke his mind and stood up for the police service he loved.”

In August 2024, the then Labor government appointed him as Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner — a role created to address crime and natural disaster issues in border regions.

At the time, then-Premier Steven Miles said, “His frontline experience and ability to work across different levels of government made him an ideal choice for the role.”

On Monday, Miles said, “I’m deeply saddened to hear of Ian’s passing. He was doing an outstanding job in this position, and many within Queensland Police are devastated by the news.”
