A landmark Commission of Inquiry into the CFMEU and alleged misconduct within the Queensland construction industry begins its public hearings today in the Brisbane Magistrates Court, marking a significant step towards addressing claims of systemic wrongdoing.
Premier David Crisafulli announced the powerful inquiry in July, following a damning report by Geoffrey Watson SC and investigative journalism that exposed allegations of “systemic violence, intimidation, misogyny and bullying” within the union.
The decision to launch the inquiry stems from the fear of retribution felt by potential witnesses. The initial Watson report interviewed only 55 people, with many critical voices refusing to speak.
Crisafulli stressed that the new inquiry, led by Stuart Wood AM KC (a leading industrial relations barrister), holds powers equivalent to a Royal Commission—including the ability to compel documents and subpoena witnesses, while also providing protection for those who testify.
“We are drawing a line in the sand to make sure workers are safe on worksites and productivity can return to construction,” Premier Crisafulli stated.
Deputy Premier and Industrial Relations Minister Jarrod Bleijie raised the political stakes, labeling the commission as “Labor’s Fitzgerald moment,” referencing the historic 1987 inquiry into political and police corruption that reshaped Queensland. The inquiry has bipartisan support, including from Opposition Leader Steven Miles.
The first block of witnesses expected to be heard this week includes:
Geoffrey Watson SC (author of the initial report).
Mark Irving SC (Federal Government-appointed Administrator of the union’s construction branches).
Construction worker Timothy Ellis.
Workplace Health and Safety executive director Sarina Wise.
The hearings can be watched live on the Commission’s official website.
