LONDON: Arsenal delivered a statement performance in the Champions League on Wednesday, defeating Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium to secure their fifth straight win in the competition and cement their place atop the group table.
The German giants suffered their first defeat of the season in all competitions, largely due to a dominant second-half display by the Gunners, whose squad depth proved the decisive factor.
The match marked a quiet return to North London for Bayern striker Harry Kane, the England skipper who previously tormented Arsenal while at Tottenham Hotspur, scoring 14 goals in 17 North London derbies. Despite having already bagged 29 goals for club and country this season, Kane admitted he had a rare off night.
“It was a tough game, which is kind of what we expected,” Kane said. “In the second half, we didn’t quite have the same energy or intensity, and we lost too many duels. It’s our first loss of the season. We don’t want to panic too much about it. But we will learn about it for sure.”
Kane, however, was defiant, predicting a future rematch: “I’m sure we’ll see them (Arsenal) again in the later stages of the Champions League.”
While the first half ended level, it was Arsenal’s strength from the bench that broke the deadlock. Manager Mikel Arteta, even missing key players like defender Gabriel and striker Viktor Gyokeres (who cost £63.5 million), had a bench “packed with match-winners.”
The difference came when Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli—both substitutes—scored the second-half goals that sealed the victory.
When asked how his current side differs from the one that lost to Bayern two seasons ago (a tie in which Kane scored a penalty), Arteta was clear: “We are different, they are different as well… We learn, we are better.” He emphasized that the club’s major summer spending has given them a depth that few teams, including Bayern, can match.
Man-of-the-match Declan Rice cautioned against complacency, despite Arsenal’s six-point lead in the Premier League and strong European position. “The Champions League—you’re either in or you’re out,” Rice said. “We just have to take it one game at a time… because on our day I think we can beat anyone.”
