Liverpool Sink to 71-Year Low After 4–1 PSV Rout as Slot Insists He’s ‘Safe’

LIVERPOOL:  The crisis engulfing Liverpool FC intensified dramatically on Wednesday night after a dismal 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven at Anfield in the Champions League, pushing the Premier League champions to their lowest point in seven decades.

The humiliating loss was the team’s ninth defeat in their last 12 matches in all competitions, a run that hasn’t been seen at the club since the relegation season of 1953-54. The result leaves manager Arne Slot under mounting, intense pressure.

The Dutchman’s side has now lost three successive games, conceding 10 goals in the process, a damning statistic for a team expected to dominate after a summer spending spree. Frustrated fans jeered Slot and his players at the final whistle, with many red seats emptying well before full-time—a clear visual indictment of the club’s stunning fall from grace.

Despite the crisis mounting around him, Slot insisted he retains the support of US-based owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

“I am feeling safe, I am OK. I have got a lot of support from above,” Slot said. “It is not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around. I’m not worried.”

The pressure on Slot was amplified by the blunt assessment from former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, now a pundit for TNT Sport.

“With each defeat it gets closer to being a crisis,” Gerrard warned. “There is no excuses for a performance like that at this football club. They are on a terrible run, their confidence is at an all-time low, they are wide open.”

The players themselves did not offer the manager any defense. Midfielder Curtis Jones delivered a particularly acidic verdict, stating the situation is now beyond simple frustration.

“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. It’s just unacceptable. I’m past being angry inside,” Jones told RTE. “We’re going to try and get this team back to where it needs to be… but right now… it needs to change.”

Liverpool initially trailed to Ivan Perisic’s early penalty. Though Dominik Szoboszlai equalized, second-half goals from Guus Til and a double from Couhaib Driouech condemned the Reds to their latest humiliation.

With six losses in their last seven Premier League matches, Liverpool head to West Ham on Sunday languishing in 12th place—the first time in more than a decade they have been in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Their European security is also uncertain: after a second defeat in five games, Liverpool sits in 13th place in the Champions League league phase, casting doubt on their ability to secure one of the top eight spots that grant automatic qualification for the last 16.
