PARIS: Under the hostile lights of the Parc des Princes, Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank delivered on his promise to redefine his team’s identity, despite ultimately falling to a thrilling 5-3 defeat against Champions League holders Paris St-Germain.
Frank had entered the match facing sharp criticism from fans following a perceived tactical surrender in the weekend’s North London Derby loss to Arsenal. His pre-match declaration that he was “1,000% sure he knew how to build a team and a club” set a defiant tone.
Frank made a key tactical shift, abandoning the five-man defense used against Arsenal and employing a traditional back four, protected by Rodrigo Bentancur and Archie Gray. He paired Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani up front, which proved highly effective, with the two strikers netting three goals between them.
For the first hour, Spurs’ intense man-for-man pressing strategy disrupted Luis Enrique’s PSG, a marked difference from the passive display against Arsenal where Frank noted his team won only 17 of 53 duels.
“I am very pleased with the performance. This was much more the identity of the team, the bravery and aggressiveness of the team,” Frank said.
Spurs twice led the Champions League holders, but a 12-minute “hot spell” from PSG, who scored three times, proved decisive.
Frank conceded that momentary lapses were punished ruthlessly by a team of PSG’s quality. The first error came just before halftime from a set-piece, allowing Vitinha to equalize after Richarlison had given Spurs the lead. The most costly error occurred when Pape Matar Sarr carelessly ceded possession at 2-2, leading directly to Fabian Ruiz putting PSG ahead for the first time.
Frank heaped praise on the opposition’s standout player, Vitinha, who scored two stunning strikes, calling him “the best midfielder in the world. He will be the next Ballon d’Or winner.”
The focus now shifts immediately to Saturday night’s crucial home game against Fulham, where Frank must consolidate the positive intent shown in Paris and translate it into a win.
