ATHENS: Kylian Mbappe produced a stunning, record-breaking performance on Wednesday night, scoring four goals as Real Madrid edged out a resilient Olympiacos in a high-octane Champions League thriller.
The Greek hosts initially took a surprise lead through Francisco Chiquinho’s 20-yard strike. But the match quickly turned into the Kylian Mbappe show, who ended what had been a three-game goal ‘drought’ in club games in spectacular fashion.
Mbappe struck an astonishing three times in the space of just seven minutes—making it the second quickest Champions League hat-trick ever.
His goals demonstrated lethal pace and finishing:
He ran onto Vinicius Jr’s beautiful pass behind the defense and finished calmly.
He headed in Arda Guler’s cross.
He beat the offside trap to complete his hat-trick from Eduardo Camavinga’s pass.
Mbappe later scored his fourth with a close-range poke from another Vinicius pass, sealing the hard-fought victory despite a late fightback from Olympiacos, whose substitutes Mehdi Taremi and Ayoub el Kaabi both scored bullet headers to keep the pressure on.
The 26-year-old was both clinical and electric, scoring his four goals from just six shots. His performance shattered several records:
He is the first Real Madrid player to score four goals in a European away match.
He set a Champions League record with the most hat-tricks away from home (four).
His tally of nine goals in five games makes this his top-scoring Champions League season to date.
He is only the third player to score a hat-trick within 29 minutes of a UCL game.
Mbappe was ecstatic after the win: “I feel good, I’m very happy. Scoring goals is always a pleasure for me. My team-mates give me lots of great passes.”
The victory was significant for Real Madrid, ending a three-game winless run in all competitions and marking their first competitive win in Athens on their 10th visit. They now sit fifth in the group standings, three points behind leaders Arsenal.
