Bangladesh Create History with Record-Breaking Victory in Australia
Darwin, August 16 : Darwin witnessed a new dawn for Bangladesh cricket today. In a historic triumph on Australian soil, the Tigers defeated the hosts…
Australia: The Matildas treated a packed Gosford crowd to a spectacular show of attacking dominance on Friday night, delivering a 5-0 demolition of rivals New Zealand. The victory was crowned by a sensational goal from Kyra Cooney-Cross that immediately entered the “Goal of the Year” conversation.
After leading 2-0 at the break, the Matildas accelerated their attack, scoring two goals within a minute through Ellie Carpenter and Cooney-Cross.
Cooney-Cross’s second-ever international goal was sublime: the midfielder started her run from the center circle, dribbled a few meters, and then unleashed a powerful right-footed shot from 35 meters that sailed past goalkeeper Anna Leat and into the top right corner. Commentator Andy Harper hailed the strike, exclaiming, “That is special… she is pure football.”
The scoring was opened by Amy Sayer, who was given the nod to replace superstar striker Sam Kerr (who started on the bench). Sayer calmly slotted home a perfectly weighted through ball from Katrina Gorry in the 13th minute, setting the tone for a commanding performance that reversed the Matildas’ recent defensive struggles against the Lionesses.
Hayley Raso doubled the advantage before half-time. Gorry then completed the scoring in added time, finishing a strong move initiated by Clare Wheeler to secure the host’s fifth goal.
The two teams will meet again in Adelaide on Tuesday evening in what will be the Matildas’ final friendly before they host the 2026 Asian Cup.
