SOUTH AUSTRALIA : A routine cave diving expedition in South Australia’s renowned, yet dangerous, Tank Cave system ended in tragedy today when a 65-year-old Victorian man drowned.Emergency crews rushed to the site near Tantanoola, west of Mount Gambier, after reports were made at 10:30 am.
It is believed that another diver in the system discovered the victim, who had become trapped within the cave’s intricate rock formations. Specialist police personnel were deployed to the scene to conduct the complex recovery operation of the man’s body.
The man, whose identity has not yet been officially released, was confirmed to be a resident of Victoria.
Tank Cave is internationally recognized for its elaborate and extensive underground system, but it has a sobering history of fatal incidents. This latest tragedy is not the first death recorded at the popular yet hazardous dive site.
In 2011, two separate individuals perished while attempting to traverse the same elaborate cave system, highlighting the extreme dangers associated with deep, complex cave diving environments.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning, including the experience level of the diver and the equipment being used, as they prepare a report for the coroner.
