LIVERPOOL : The spotlight of scrutiny at Anfield has shifted from Mohamed Salah to his defensive counterpart, captain Virgil van Dijk, following Liverpool’s deeply disappointing 1-1 draw against Sunderland on Wednesday.
While Salah, who signed a lucrative new two-year deal in the summer, was benched for the second successive Premier League game due to poor form, it was Van Dijk whose defensive struggles became the focus of the night.
The 34-year-old Dutchman, once the peerless bedrock of a side that swept up major trophies, has visibly lost the air of invincibility he carried since his arrival in 2018. His current performance level is now mirroring the defensive vulnerability that has plagued Liverpool since Arne Slot took over, amidst a high-cost summer refit that has yet to deliver results.
Van Dijk’s struggles were starkly encapsulated in the 67th minute when Chemsdine Talbi gave Sunderland a deserved lead. The captain gave the ball away cheaply, then compounded the error by standing off and turning his back on Talbi’s 25-yard shot, which deflected past goalkeeper Alisson.
Former England captain Steph Houghton criticized the indecision: “Van Dijk gives the ball away and then he just drops off. It’s the wrong decision. He needs to go to the ball. Him not making the decision means that no one else knows what to do.”
This latest mistake follows a costly panic-stricken handball that gave away a penalty in the recent heavy Champions League loss to PSV Eindhoven. Statistics show Van Dijk is recording his worst recoveries per game in his Liverpool career, with tackles and interceptions also down compared to last season.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp summed up the sentiment: “Virgil Van Dijk last season couldn’t make a mistake… but right now he’s making mistakes and second-guessing himself.”
While a late Nordi Mukiele own goal salvaged a point for Liverpool, Van Dijk’s struggle, which ended with him playing as an emergency striker in a desperate late push, was symptomatic of a team that looks lost and rudderless.
