MELBOURNE : Victorian health officials have issued an urgent warning to residents and travelers after the Ross River virus was detected in multiple mosquito traps across the Wellington and Gippsland regions.
With warmer weather accelerating mosquito breeding cycles, the Department of Health is bracing for a rise in infections as the holiday season begins.
Ross River virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While not fatal, the infection can be debilitating, with symptoms that can linger for several months. Key symptoms include:
Fever and fatigue
Severe joint pain and swelling
Muscle aches
Rashes
Symptoms typically appear within days or weeks of being bitten, but in some cases, the onset of illness can take months. Currently, there is no vaccine or specific medical treatment for the virus.
Health officials noted that the current environmental conditions—including moderate temperatures and recent rainfall—have created a “perfect storm” for mosquito breeding in inland waterways and coastal areas. While local councils are initiating control operations, the sheer volume of mosquito activity makes management a significant challenge.
The Department of Health advises anyone experiencing persistent joint pain or fatigue to consult their GP. Prevention remains the only effective defense against the alphavirus.
