MELBOURNE : A Jewish family in St Kilda East narrowly escaped tragedy on Christmas morning after an arsonist firebombed a vehicle displaying Hanukkah decorations parked just meters from their home.
The attack occurred around 3:00 AM on Wednesday. A woman and three young children were asleep in a nearby bedroom when the car was set alight. While the vehicle was destroyed, the family escaped without physical injury.
A Community on Edge The home belongs to a prominent local Rabbi who was in New York at the time of the incident. He is reportedly traveling back to Melbourne to be with his shaken family. The victim’s wife has briefly returned to the property to collect essentials but has indicated she will not remain in the home due to fears of further violence.
The Investigation Victoria Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident as a targeted act of antisemitism. Authorities stated they have identified a suspect, though no arrests have been made at this stage. Private security and police have bolstered patrols in the area.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, questioning the “evil ideology” required to target a family home during the holiday season. “It’s just beyond comprehension,” the Prime Minister said.
