The $270 Million Backlog: Services Australia Issues Urgent Bank Update Warning

Darwin, Australia: Services Australia has issued a nationwide alert as the pool of unclaimed Medicare rebates reaches a staggering $270 million. The agency reports that nearly one million citizens have failed to receive funds they are legally entitled to, simply because the system cannot find a valid bank account to deposit the money.

Hank Jongen, General Manager of Services Australia, noted that many Australians simply “set and forget” their Medicare settings. “People use their Medicare card at the doctor and don’t think any more about it,” he said. “When they change bank accounts, it often doesn’t occur to them to update Medicare.”

The agency is urging all Australians—particularly those who have recently moved or changed banks—to verify their details. For those unable to use digital services via myGov, Services Australia recommends visiting a local service centre or calling the Medicare program directly to ensure their “lost” rebates are returned.
