NEWCASTLE : A 36-year-old man is facing significant legal penalties after allegedly displaying Nazi-themed tattoos while visiting a popular Newcastle beach on Christmas Eve.
Andrew Lorant, a resident of Urunga, was arrested at his home on Friday evening following a public tip-off. Police allege that while Lorant was at Bar Beach with his family, he publicly displayed tattoos on the back of his legs depicting “SS bolts”—a known Nazi paramilitary symbol—alongside the phrase “white power.”
The Legal Framework Under the Crimes Amendment (Prohibition on Display of Nazi Symbols) Act 2022, it is a criminal offence in New South Wales to knowingly display a Nazi symbol in public without a reasonable excuse.
Lorant has been officially charged with.
Knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol by public act without excuse.
Causing a prohibited Nazi symbol to be displayed in a public place.
Potential Penalties If convicted, the maximum penalty for an individual under these laws is 12 months’ imprisonment and/or a fine of $11,000.
Following his arrest, Lorant was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station. He has since been granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before the Newcastle Local Court on January 22.
