SYDNEY : Shoppers at Westfield Mt Druitt were plunged into a state of alarm this afternoon after a 21-year-old man allegedly ran through the complex armed with a knife.
The disturbance occurred just after 2:00 PM today, causing a frantic scene in the busy food court. Eyewitness footage captured the moment heavily armed police surrounded the suspect on the ground, with a large blade clearly visible on the floor just inches from his feet.
Multiple police units descended on the shopping centre following reports of an armed man moving through the crowds. Officers were able to intercept the suspect quickly, pinned him to the ground, and secured the weapon. No injuries have been reported among the shoppers or staff.
Social media footage shows a tense atmosphere as shoppers were urged to clear the area while officers maintained a perimeter around the arrested individual. Police have confirmed that the 21-year-old is now in custody and assisting with inquiries.
Westfield Mt Druitt remained open following the incident, though a small area near the food court was cordoned off for forensic examination.
