ADELAIDE : South Australian Police (SAPOL) have been granted significant new powers to conduct random searches for weapons across the city’s entire public transport network. The move comes as authorities ramp up security measures ahead of the anticipated New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The emergency declaration allows officers to stop and search passengers on trains, trams, and buses, as well as at major interchanges, without the traditional requirement of “reasonable suspicion.” The primary objective is to deter the carrying of knives and other dangerous weapons during the high-traffic holiday period.
Passengers using the Adelaide Metro network over the next 48 hours should expect a visible police presence. Under these temporary powers:
Officers may use metal detection wands or physical searches of bags and clothing.
Search zones include the Adelaide Railway Station and major bus interchanges.
Refusal to comply with a lawful search request can result in fines or removal from the transport network.
Authorities have emphasized that these measures are proactive and designed to ensure that families and revelers can travel safely to and from the CBD for fireworks and festivities. “Our priority is public safety, and we want everyone to enjoy the New Year’s celebrations without the fear of violence,” a SAPOL spokesperson said.
