MELBOURNE: Detectives have charged a woman and a teenager following a violent confrontation at St Kilda Pier that left a Norwegian tourist with a broken arm and forced him to flee Australia.
The 34-year-old victim was allegedly surrounded by a group of up to eight people at approximately 1:00 pm on Christmas Eve. The group reportedly accused the man of taking unauthorized photos—a claim police have since debunked.
Following search warrants executed in Hillside and Coolaroo, police arrested two individuals:
Charged with affray, assault with company, assault by kicking, and common law assault. She is scheduled to appear in court on July 8.
Charged with affray, recklessly causing injury, and assault in company. He will face a children’s court on January 19.
These arrests follow a 19-year-old Deer Park man who turned himself in on December 24 and faces charges including robbery and intentionally causing injury.
Detective Senior Constable Jesse Coppel described the attack as “disgusting,” noting that the group continued the assault even after the victim showed them his phone to prove his innocence.
“It seems to me as if they have used this as an excuse to confront this man,” Coppel said. “The information we have indicates that people have seen the contents of his phone prior to it being destroyed, and there was nothing of that nature on the phone.”
The victim’s phone was allegedly stolen and thrown into the water during the attack. One suspect is believed to still be at large.
