‘This is Not Who We Are’: Sporting Icons Join National Plea for Bondi Justice

SYDNEY — In an unprecedented show of unity, more than 60 of Australia’s most celebrated sporting figures have issued a powerful open letter demanding a Federal Royal Commission into the December 14 Bondi Beach terror attack. The letter, signed by icons including Ian Thorpe, Lleyton Hewitt, and Jessica Fox, argues that a national inquiry is the only way to address the “national crisis” of rising antisemitism and radicalization.

The movement moved from paper to the pavement on Sunday as Olympic legend Dawn Fraser, former Senator Nova Peris, and Jewish sprinter Steve Solomon visited the Bondi memorial. Laying flowers and embracing the families of the 15 victims, the athletes spoke with raw emotion about the state of the nation.

Peris warned that without a rigorous investigation, Australia risks “investigating funerals once again.”

Dawn Fraser directed a blunt message toward Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, urging him to “come down off his high horse.”

The sporting community argues that if the Jewish community, which bore the brunt of the massacre, is calling for a Royal Commission, the government has a moral obligation to listen. Steve Solomon echoed this, stating that the Australian spirit is built on taking feedback and improving as a community—a value they now demand from their political leaders.
