SYDNEY: The Sydney Thunder have made a ruthless selection call ahead of their critical Big Bash League encounter against the Brisbane Heat, dropping young batting sensation Sam Konstas from the starting XI.
Despite being named in the initial extended squad earlier this week, the 20-year-old was overlooked by head coach Trevor Bayliss as the team arrived at the SCG. The move comes as the Thunder struggle at the bottom of the BBL table, a sharp decline for the 2025 finalists.
Australian cricket legend Michael Hussey admitted he was caught off guard by the decision to bench the talented opener, despite Konstas’ recent struggles with the bat.
“I actually am a little bit surprised, to be honest,” Hussey said on Fox Cricket. “Yes, he has been battling a little bit with form in the last few innings and is probably a little bit low on confidence—they will know inside the camp how he is going personally.”
Hussey suggested the move might serve as a “circuit breaker,” allowing Konstas to reset in the nets before the final games of the season.
With the Thunder desperate to salvage their season, Bayliss has opted for experience over potential. Konstas, who recently signed a lucrative four-year extension with the club, has failed to pass 50 in his last four innings.
The task for the revamped Thunder lineup is daunting. They face a Brisbane Heat side bolstered by the return of Test stars Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja, both fresh off a dominant 4-1 Ashes series victory over England.
Currently sitting in last place, the Thunder must find a way to stop the 7th-placed Heat to keep their slim mathematical hopes alive. For Konstas, the focus shifts to the training track as he looks to reclaim his spot in the green jersey.
