UK Chancellor Calls Iran War a “Mistake”

Darwin, 16 April: Rachel Reeves, the United Kingdom’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, has described the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel as a “mistake,” questioning whether it has made the world any safer.

Speaking at an event hosted by CNBC in Washington, Reeves said she does not believe claims that the war has improved global security.

“This is not about whether you like the Iranian government or not—I personally do not,” she stated. “The bigger question is how you achieve the change you want.”

Reeves emphasized that diplomatic channels had been open prior to the escalation. “There was a diplomatic path available. Talks were ongoing between the two sides, and formal negotiations were taking place,” she said.

She criticized the decision to abandon negotiations in favor of direct conflict, calling it a wrong move. “Ending diplomatic discussions and moving into confrontation was a mistake,” Reeves added. “Because I do not believe we are safer today than we were a few weeks ago.”

Her remarks mark one of the strongest criticisms from a senior UK government official regarding the current global situation.

Tensions in the Middle East have sharply escalated in recent weeks amid intensifying clashes between Iran and Israel, alongside U.S. involvement. The situation became even more complicated after recent peace talks in Islamabad ended without any agreement, raising concerns about further instability in the region.
