Melbourne, July 22 — The United Nations has expressed deep condolences following the tragic crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft on the campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka, which resulted in numerous student casualties.
The message of sympathy was shared via a post on the verified Facebook page of the United Nations office in Bangladesh.
The post stated:
“The United Nations extends its heartfelt condolences to those affected and to the families of the victims of the Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka.”
“We are deeply saddened to acknowledge that many people, including several children, lost their lives, and dozens more were injured. The United Nations pays tribute to the families and friends of those who died and wishes a swift recovery to the injured on this tragic day.”
The UN also announced its observance of the national day of mourning declared on Tuesday (July 22), and expressed its support for the interim government of Bangladesh in responding to this devastating emergency.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:00 PM on Monday, when a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft lost control during a training session and crashed directly into a building on the Milestone School and College campus in Uttara. A massive explosion followed, shaking the entire area and triggering a fire that engulfed both the aircraft and the building.
According to initial reports from the Fire Service, the crash has so far claimed the lives of 31 people, including the aircraft’s pilot, while another 164 individuals are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals in the capital.
