Darwin, 02 April: Bangladesh has requested special permission from the United States to import fuel, including refined diesel, from Russia as it grapples with energy supply challenges.
The issue was discussed during a meeting in Washington on Tuesday between Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
Both sides also expressed interest in strengthening bilateral ties.
According to diplomatic sources, the talks included the possibility of importing fuel refined in third countries using Russian crude oil.
The discussion comes amid disruptions in global energy supply chains caused by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, prompting Bangladesh to explore alternative fuel sources to meet urgent demand.
Previously, Bangladesh was unable to take advantage of limited global waivers granted by the United States for purchasing Russian energy, as no Russian oil tankers were en route to the country at the time. This issue was raised during the meeting.
In a statement, the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington noted that the country is currently facing significant challenges in the energy sector due to global supply disruptions. The foreign minister sought U.S. support to ensure Bangladesh’s energy security.
Chris Wright acknowledged the situation and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to assisting Bangladesh in securing energy supplies during this critical period. He added that the concerns raised would be carefully considered in coordination with relevant departments.
The meeting also covered long-term energy cooperation, including ensuring a stable and secure energy supply for Bangladesh and expanding the potential for importing energy products from the United States.
