Hrithik Roshan Breaks Silence on the Failure of War 2

Despite its massive budget and an ensemble of top stars, Ayan Mukerji’s War 2 has failed to meet audience expectations. The film, which had generated enormous pre-release buzz, has ultimately turned out to be one of Bollywood’s biggest disappointments of the year. Nearly a month after its release, lead actor Hrithik Roshan has finally spoken out about the film’s underperformance.

In a heartfelt post on social media, Hrithik reflected on his role as “Kabir,” revealing that he had felt a sense of unease during filming. According to a report by The Indian Express, the actor wrote on Instagram, “Playing Kabir was an amazing experience. It all felt so comfortable, so easy. I knew exactly what to do — just perform, finish the day’s work, and go home.”

He added that working with director Ayan Mukerji was “a joy,” saying, “Ayan directed me beautifully. Everything felt perfect, as if success was guaranteed. There were no worries — just do the work right, and everything would fall into place.”

However, beneath that apparent calm, Hrithik admitted he had inner doubts. “One voice inside me kept saying everything was fine, but another kept warning me that things were too easy. I wasn’t feeling that mental preparation or creative challenge that an artist should feel,” he confessed.

With a production budget of nearly ₹400 crore, War 2 was among Yash Raj Films’ biggest projects. The movie was announced as a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War, which was directed by Siddharth Anand. For the sequel, the directorial duties were handed over to Ayan Mukerji.

Alongside Hrithik Roshan, the film featured South Indian superstar Jr NTR, Bollywood actress Kiara Advani, and several other prominent names. Yet despite its star power and high production value, War 2 failed to strike a chord with audiences.

Released on August 14, 2025, the film grossed around ₹364 crore worldwide — a respectable figure, but far short of what was needed to recover its colossal budget.
