Darwin, 17 May : Bulgaria Wins Eurovision 2026 Amid Boycotts and Political Controversy
Bulgaria has won this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, but the event was overshadowed by intense political tensions and controversy over Israel’s participation.
Several countries boycotted the competition in protest, turning one of Europe’s biggest music events into a politically charged spectacle, CNN reported.
Bulgarian artist DARA secured victory with her club hit “Bangaranga”, impressing audiences with energetic choreography and a standout performance.
Although the song was considered a strong contender, its overwhelming popularity among both juries and public voters exceeded expectations. After a dramatic final, Bulgaria defeated Israel to claim the title.
The 27-year-old singer won by a commanding margin of 171 points over Israeli contestant Noam Bettan, setting a new record for the biggest winning margin in Eurovision history. The victory also marked Bulgaria’s first-ever Eurovision championship and the first time since 2017 that both juries and televoters selected the same winner.
However, the glamour of Saturday night’s grand final in Vienna was eclipsed by political controversy.
In protest against Israel’s participation, several countries — including Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Slovenia, and Netherlands — boycotted the contest. Organizers faced what many described as the biggest crisis in the event’s 70-year history.
The backlash extended beyond participating nations. Many Eurovision fans also chose to boycott the event.
Outside the venue, protesters dressed as clowns held placards reading “United by Genocide,” mocking the contest’s official slogan, “United by Music.”
Earlier in Tuesday’s semifinal, boos were reportedly heard during Noam Bettan’s performance. However, Saturday’s televised broadcast did not appear to include audible jeers during his act.
Tensions resurfaced during the vote count, when Bettan briefly moved into the lead, prompting loud boos and shouting from parts of the arena crowd.
