Army Officers Produced in Tribunal Over 28 Rampura Deaths

DHAKA — Two army officers, including a senior official from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today in connection with a case filed over the killing of 28 people in Dhaka’s Rampura area during the recent July uprising.

The accused officers are BGB Lieutenant Colonel Redowanul Islam and former BGB Major Md Rafat Bin Alam.

The two officers were transported to the tribunal from the Dhaka Cantonment sub-jail under a heavy security detail. They were moved in an air-conditioned green prison van specifically marked “Bangladesh Jail–Prison Van.”

This production marks the second appearance for Redowanul and Rafat before the ICT, having first been presented to the tribunal on October 22 following their release from military custody. At that time, ICT-1 formally showed them arrested in the case and ordered their transfer to jail.

The case involves a total of four individuals who have been formally accused of involvement in the mass killings:

Lt. Col. Redowanul Islam (Army/BGB)

Former Major Md Rafat Bin Alam (Army/BGB)

Former Khilgaon Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Rashedul Islam (Fugitive)

Former Rampura Officer-in-charge Md Moshior Rahman (Fugitive)

The two civilian officials remain at large. The proceedings today were a continuation of the judicial process to investigate and prosecute the officers allegedly responsible for the deaths during the period of intense civil unrest.
