KOLKATA: Veteran West Bengal singer Nachiketa Chakraborty, a familiar voice in regional music since the 1990s, was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata early Sunday morning after experiencing acute chest discomfort.
The 61-year-old performer, known for his prolific contributions to Bengali music, was rushed to the facility around 2 am. Doctors quickly diagnosed a cardiac problem and performed an emergency procedure to stabilize his condition.
Hospital sources confirmed that Chakraborty is now in a stable condition after two stents were successfully installed.
Nachiketa’s daughter, Dhansiri Chakraborty, spoke to reporters, crediting the swift action for preventing the situation from worsening.
“He was active and had performed multiple shows,” she said. “When he became unwell, we took him to the hospital without delay. The prompt care meant the situation did not become worse. He is much better than he was.”
Sources close to the singer noted that despite managing chronic health issues and typically adhering to a controlled diet, he had no prior history of heart disease. The recent run of back-to-back performances is believed to have contributed to increased physical strain leading to the cardiac event.
Due to his hospitalization, Nachiketa’s scheduled concert in Asansol for Sunday has been cancelled. Organizers have also confirmed that additional dates over the next few days will be postponed while the singer recuperates. Fans and colleagues across the region have sent messages of support to the family following the news
