Bangladesh Politics Shaken as Prominent Reform Leader Osman Hadi Shot

Darwin, 13 December: Bangladesh witnessed heightened political tension today following an assassination attempt on Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure of the July Revolution movement and a well-known critic of India’s regional influence. According to initial reports, Hadi was shot a day after the announcement of the national election schedule, leaving him critically injured.

Witnesses stated that unidentified assailants opened fire on Hadi in the capital, after which he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors described his condition as “extremely critical.” Authorities have yet to release official details regarding the identity or motive of the attackers.

Hadi, who rose to prominence for his uncompromising political stance and his leadership role in the movement that forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power, has long been a polarizing figure. Hasina is currently believed to be residing in India, a point often highlighted by Hadi in his criticism of New Delhi’s involvement in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.

The attack has drawn strong condemnations from the interim government. Chief Adviser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, along with other advisers and senior political leaders, denounced the incident as “an attack on Bangladesh’s sovereignty and democratic process.” In a joint statement, they pledged a swift and thorough investigation, vowing that those responsible would face “the highest punishment under the law.”

Security analysts say the incident has intensified public anxiety ahead of the national polls, raising concerns over political stability and the safety of high-profile leaders. Civil society members and rights groups have urged authorities to ensure security across the country and prevent further violence.

As the investigation continues, the nation remains on edge, with many calling for unity and vigilance during what is widely seen as a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s political future.
