Darwin, 18 December:
Renowned Indian playback singer Kumar Sanu has taken legal action against his former wife, Rita Bhattacharya, as their long-standing personal dispute has now reached the courtroom.
The legendary singer has filed a defamation case in the Bombay High Court, seeking compensation of ₹3 million over what he describes as defamatory remarks made by Rita.
According to reports in Indian media, nearly two decades after their separation, Rita Bhattacharya recently made serious allegations against Kumar Sanu during an interview.
She claimed that Sanu subjected her to physical and mental abuse while she was pregnant, and that he failed to provide adequate support for food and medical expenses. She further alleged that she had to sell her own jewelry to survive. Rita also spoke openly about Sanu’s alleged extramarital relationships.
Angered by these statements, Kumar Sanu decided to pursue legal action. He maintains that the allegations are completely false, baseless, and motivated by malice. The singer argues that such claims have damaged the clean image he has built over a career spanning more than four decades.
Through his lawyer, Sana Rais Khan, Kumar Sanu has issued a legal notice demanding the immediate removal of the controversial interview videos from the internet. His legal team stated that Kumar Sanu has captivated millions with his music for over 40 years and that false allegations made for cheap publicity cannot tarnish the reputation of a respected artist.
It is worth noting that Sanu had already sent a legal notice to Rita last September. As the matter remained unresolved, he has now approached the court seeking substantial compensation.
After nearly two decades, this legal battle between the former couple has become a major topic of discussion in India’s entertainment industry.
