LONDON : Academy Award winner Kate Winslet has officially stepped behind the camera for her directorial debut, Goodbye June, a poignant family drama scheduled to arrive on Netflix this December 24.
The project is a significant milestone for the Titanic star, not only as her first time directing but as a collaboration with her son, Joe Anders, who wrote the screenplay. The film features acting legend Helen Mirren in the lead role as June, an ailing matriarch whose family gathers during the Christmas season to bid her a final farewell.

Winslet, who also stars in the film as Julie—the most financially responsible of June’s four daughters—described the high-pressure environment of the shoot. With only seven weeks to film and a limited 16-day window with Helen Mirren, the production was a race against time.
“It was quite nerve-wracking because I had to get everything done,” Winslet admitted. “But having [Joe] around… it was special to work with him as colleagues, on equal playing fields. He was a first-time writer, I was a first-time director.”

While the film deals with the heavy subject of mortality, Winslet emphasizes that the core of the movie is about the concerted efforts of a family to make a loved one’s passing comfortable and memorable.
The film serves as a Christmas gift to Netflix subscribers, offering a relatable and grounded look at grief, reconciliation, and the enduring bonds of family.
