Darwin, 11 January:
The bushfire situation in southeastern Australia has taken a severe turn, with the state of Victoria facing widespread devastation. Ongoing fires have burned at least 350,000 hectares of forest and residential areas so far. More than 300 homes and structures have been destroyed, and police have confirmed at least one fatality linked to the fires.
The Victorian government has declared a State of Disaster across large parts of the state, covering 18 local government areas. Authorities say extreme heat, dry conditions, and strong winds are fueling the rapid spread of the fires, and it may take considerable time to bring the situation under control.
Fires Intensified by Extreme Heatwave
Over the past several days, temperatures in Victoria and neighboring New South Wales have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. Meteorological officials warn that the heatwave may persist for several more days. Dry winds are allowing the fires to spread quickly from one area to another, with several blazes now completely out of control.
Casualties and Missing Persons
Police reported the recovery of a body from a fire-affected area, with authorities believing the death is directly linked to the bushfires. Several people were initially reported missing as the fires spread, though verification efforts are ongoing.
Power and Communication Disruptions
More than tens of thousands of residents are currently without electricity due to damage to power lines and infrastructure. Communication networks have also been disrupted in several areas. Authorities are repeatedly urging the public to avoid affected regions unless absolutely necessary.
Firefighting and Rescue Operations
Thousands of firefighters, military personnel, and volunteer crews are battling the fires on the ground. Helicopters and specialized firefighting aircraft are being deployed to combat the blazes from the air. However, officials caution that without more favorable weather conditions, it could take days or even weeks to fully contain the fires.

Prime Minister’s Assurance
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has visited fire-ravaged areas and assured affected residents of full government support. The federal government has announced a AUD 19.5 million emergency assistance and recovery package for those impacted by the disaster.
Health Risks and Public Warnings
Thick smoke from the bushfires has caused hazardous air quality levels across Victoria and neighboring states. Health authorities have advised children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions to stay indoors as much as possible and to use masks when necessary.
Although a slight drop in temperature is expected, meteorologists say there is no significant rainfall forecast in the near future. As a result, the bushfire threat remains high, and authorities warn that further evacuation orders may be issued depending on how the situation develops.
