Darwin, 09 June : France appeared revitalized after their unexpected defeat to Côte d’Ivoire. Didier Deschamps’ side bounced back impressively in their final warm-up match, defeating Northern Ireland 3-1 thanks to a superb hat-trick from Michael Olise.
The World Cup contenders played with attacking intent from the outset in Monday night’s match in Lille. Four days earlier, despite creating numerous chances and taking the lead against Côte d’Ivoire, France had suffered a disappointing defeat. Determined not to repeat those mistakes, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and their teammates put their opponents under pressure from the opening whistle.
The hosts created three clear chances within the first 15 minutes, but the French forwards failed to capitalize. Mbappé’s first effort missed the target, while his second was comfortably saved by the Northern Ireland goalkeeper.
After dominating a Northern Ireland side that failed to qualify for the World Cup, France finally found the breakthrough in the 43rd minute. Following a saved shot from Dembélé, Michael Olise reacted quickest to the rebound and fired home from close range.
The hosts doubled their advantage early in the second half. In the 49th minute, after Lucas Hernandez’s header was blocked, Olise struck the rebound with a powerful shot to score his second goal of the night.
Having managed only two off-target shots in the opening hour, Northern Ireland reduced the deficit in the 64th minute. Patrick Kelly received a pass in front of goal and calmly slotted the ball into the net.
However, the visitors’ joy was short-lived. In the 74th minute, Olise created space brilliantly on the right flank before unleashing a powerful curling effort from outside the box that flew into the far corner, completing his hat-trick.
It was the Bayern Munich winger’s seventh goal for the national team. With seven goals in 17 appearances, Olise once again demonstrated his growing importance to the French side.
France will begin their World Cup campaign against Senegal on June 16. Their other Group I opponents are Iraq and Norway.
