Darwin, 22 June : Spain were held to a goalless draw against modest Cape Verde in their opening group match. For the European champions, such a disappointing start at the World Cup felt almost unbelievable. With enormous pressure on their shoulders, “La Roja” needed a magical night to respond.
At Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium against Saudi Arabia, they delivered exactly that. A four-goal spectacle and a display of flowing, almost artistic football sent a clear message—Spain are not just here to participate, but to challenge for the title.
From the very beginning, Saudi Arabia fell into a defensive shell. Their deep 5-4-1 low block was meant to absorb pressure, but it quickly became an invitation for Spain’s midfield maestros to find space. Exploiting those gaps, Spain effectively ended the contest within the first 24 minutes, scoring three goals and leaving the 2022 World Cup giant-killers stunned.

The breakthrough came in the 10th minute. Mikel Oyarzabal surged down the left flank at high speed, breaking through the defensive line before delivering a low, inviting cross into the box. Like a predator striking its prey, Spanish wonderkid Lamine Yamal met the ball and slotted it into the net.
It was his first World Cup goal—perhaps the beginning of a new story in global football.
With that strike, the 18-year-old Yamal etched his name alongside Brazilian legend Pelé, becoming one of the youngest players in World Cup history to score a goal, matching a record that had stood for 68 years.
Spain went on to dominate the match, with Oyarzabal scoring twice in the 21st and 24th minutes, sealing a commanding first-half performance that left Saudi Arabia outclassed and overwhelmed.
