Darwin, 24 June : Ghana have started their World Cup campaign with a win. Today, in their second group match, they were tested again. In that challenge, Ghana did not give England even a single chance. With a defensive masterclass, the African side held England to a goalless draw in their second match of the FIFA World Cup.
The Group ‘L’ match in Boston ended 0–0. As a result, England and Ghana now both have 4 points in the group. However, England sit at the top of the table due to a better goal difference.
On paper, England were far stronger in this World Cup match. Naturally, the former world champions entered their second game against Ghana as clear favourites.
But despite creating continuous attacks throughout the match, England—led by Harry Kane—failed to find the back of the net. Instead, Ghana impressed with their defensive resilience and managed to keep England at bay.
England had a brilliant start to the tournament, defeating 2018 runners-up Croatia in their opening match. Ghana also began with a win against Panama. But today, neither side managed to outplay the other.
In Boston, England could not create clear scoring chances. They had 78% possession in the first half and attempted 19 attacks, with three shots on target—but none resulted in a goal.
On the other hand, Ghana, while playing a defensive game, struggled to mount attacks of their own. They had far less possession and managed only one notable attack. However, what they did well was protect their goal effectively. On a night focused on defense, England failed to score.
During the match, England star Harry Kane suffered a head injury in the 16th minute and briefly went down. However, he soon returned to the action. Still, he was not at his usual sharp form, and England ultimately dropped points.
