Sports Desk: One of the greatest all-rounders in the history of cricket, Sir Garfield Sobers, has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary West Indies cricketer breathed his last, leaving the cricketing world in mourning.
Widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder the game has ever seen, Sobers was exceptional with the bat, the ball, and in the field. His remarkable versatility made him one of the most complete cricketers in history.
In 1968, Sobers etched his name into the record books by becoming the first cricketer to hit six sixes in six consecutive balls in first-class cricket. Representing Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan at St Helen’s Ground in Swansea, Wales, he achieved the historic feat, which remains one of cricket’s most iconic moments.
Late commentator and former Australia captain Richie Benaud once described Sobers by saying, “Sobers was the greatest all-rounder the game has ever seen.”

Sobers made his first-class debut for Barbados in 1953 at just 16 years of age. His extraordinary talent earned him a call-up to the West Indies national team within a year. Following his Test debut in 1954, he quickly established himself as one of the finest players in international cricket.
In 1958, he scored his maiden Test century against Pakistan in Kingston. He did far more than reach three figures, producing an unbeaten 365, which set a new world record for the highest individual score in a Test innings at the time. The record stood for nearly 36 years before another West Indies legend, Brian Lara, surpassed it in 1994.
Sobers retired from international cricket at the age of 38. Between 1954 and 1974, he played 93 Test matches for the West Indies, scoring 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets, underlining his extraordinary all-round brilliance.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sir Garfield Sobers enriched the game with countless achievements. His passing marks the end of an era, and cricket has lost a true legend who will forever be remembered as one of the greatest all-rounders of all time.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to cricket, Sobers was knighted by the British government in 1975, earning the title “Sir.”
