Darwin, 19 May : Police in Bangladesh’s Chapainawabganj district have recovered the body of a private tutor, identified as Mariam Begum, from a house where she regularly taught a fifth-grade student.

The body was found stuffed inside a sack on Tuesday morning after a call was made to the national emergency service, 999.

Police have detained a couple, identified as Rubel and Sumi, in connection with the incident.

The matter was confirmed by Wasim Firoz, Additional Superintendent of Police of the district.

The deceased, Mariam Begum, was the wife of Mosaddek Hossain and a resident of Ujjalpara area under Chapainawabganj municipality.

According to police and local sources, Mariam used to tutor Mithila, a fifth-grade student and daughter of Sumi Khatun, at their residence in the Adhirlangra Mor–Choukapara area.

She went to the house for tutoring on Monday but did not return home afterward. Later that night, one of her children filed a general diary (GD) with the local police station after she went missing.

On Tuesday morning, police recovered Mariam’s body from the house of the detained couple after receiving a tip-off through the emergency hotline.

Authorities said injury marks were found on her head and lips, while one of her earrings appeared torn off.

Local residents alleged that Sumi Khatun had previously been accused of drugging women through juice mixed with sedatives and snatching their gold ornaments.

Police official Wasim Firoz said the body had been recovered and the suspects were taken into custody for questioning.

Based on their preliminary statements, investigators suspect Mariam may have been killed for her gold earrings.
The body has been sent for an autopsy, and further investigation is underway.
