Darwin, 12 June : Shakira, who has previously sung official World Cup songs, once again took the stage for the 2026 edition. Her 2010 World Cup hit Waka Waka from South Africa is still remembered fondly by fans worldwide.
For the 2026 World Cup, Shakira performed the official song Dai Dai, alongside Nigerian artist Burna Boy. The two stars energized the opening ceremony with their performance.
Wearing a yellow outfit, Shakira captivated the audience with her singing and dancing. Earlier in the program, Mexican singer Fey Olvera and Venezuelan artist Danny Ocean also performed.
The performers highlighted the history and cultural heritage of Mexico, one of the co-hosts of this year’s World Cup.
The opening ceremony began at 11:30 AM Mexico Time on Thursday. Later, at 1 PM, the historic Azteca Stadium hosted the opening match between the hosts, Mexico, and South Africa.

This World Cup is the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches over 38 days. Before the tournament officially kicked off, Shakira wowed the crowd on stage.
Alongside Burna Boy, Shakira performed the official song Dai Dai. The opening ceremony was celebrated not only in Mexico but also in the other co-host countries, the United States and Canada.
In addition to Shakira, the grand cultural event at Mexico City Stadium included performances by Alejandro Fernandez, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Angeles Azules, Mana, and Thalia.
The 2010 World Cup took place in South Africa. On June 11, the host nation played against Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg, ending in a 1-1 draw. This year, Mexico hosts the opening match against South Africa, raising the question: will fans witness a repeat of the 16-year-old memorable match?
