Darwin, 26 June : Ivory Coast have qualified for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history.
The African giants secured a 2-0 victory over Caribbean nation Curaçao in their final Group E match on Friday. Despite an impressive debut World Cup campaign, Curaçao’s journey came to an end with the defeat.
The victory saw The Elephants finish third in the group with six points from three matches, earning one of the four best third-placed spots to book their place in the Round of 32. They will face either France or Norway in the knockout stage.
At Philadelphia Stadium in the United States, Ivory Coast dominated possession from the opening whistle. They took the lead in just the seventh minute after a costly defensive error by Curaçao. Although Yann Diomandé initially lost possession, Curaçao’s defenders failed to clear the ball inside their own penalty area, allowing Nicolas Pépé to capitalize with a clinical finish.
Curaçao responded well to the early setback, but Gary’s effort sailed wide of the post. Amad Diallo continued to threaten for Ivory Coast throughout the remainder of the first half, but the score remained unchanged.
At the other end, Tahith Chong tested the goalkeeper with a long-range half-volley, but his effort missed the target. Ivory Coast therefore went into the break with a narrow 1-0 lead.
The second half was almost entirely controlled by Ivory Coast. They continued to pile pressure on Curaçao, and their dominance was rewarded in the 76th minute. Former Arsenal forward Nicolas Pépé latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Ibrahim Sangaré before calmly finishing to score his second goal of the match and seal the victory.
Curaçao pushed hard for a late comeback in the closing stages. Long-range efforts from Tahith Chong and Noslin were brilliantly denied by Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana. Although six minutes of stoppage time were added, Curaçao failed to find the net, as Ivory Coast held on for a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Looking at the final Group E standings, Ivory Coast finished with six points from three matches. Despite being level on points with Germany, they ended third due to an inferior goal difference (+2 compared to Germany’s +6). Under FIFA’s current tournament format, however, six points were enough for them to qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams and advance to the Round of 32.
Meanwhile, Curaçao—who lost to Germany in their opening match and drew with Ecuador in their second—finished bottom of the group with just one point after suffering defeat in their final game, bringing their maiden World Cup campaign to an end.
