Darwin, 04 July : Defending champions Argentina survived a major scare against World Cup debutants Cape Verde, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory after extra time to book their place in the quarter-finals.

After the match ended 1-1 in regulation time, the Albiceleste finally overcame the Blue Sharks in a thrilling extra-time battle at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Argentina went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to Lionel Messi’s first-half strike. However, Cape Verde produced a fearless display after halftime and throughout extra time, pushing the world champions to their limits.

Despite trailing at the interval, Cape Verde came out aggressively in the second half and found their reward in the 59th minute. Winger Moreira combined with captain Ryan Mendes, whose cut-back found Deroy Duarte. From a difficult angle, Duarte fired a precise shot beyond Lisandro Martínez and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to bring his side level at 1-1.

Following the equaliser, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni responded with key substitutions, introducing Julián Álvarez for Lautaro Martínez and Nico González in place of Almada. But Cape Verde’s veteran goalkeeper Vozinha proved almost unbeatable. He denied Messi from point-blank range in the 62nd minute before producing another outstanding save to palm away the Argentine captain’s curling free-kick ten minutes later.

Argentina regained the lead in the 92nd minute of extra time. From a Messi corner, Alexis Mac Allister flicked the ball into the path of Lisandro Martínez, who controlled it before smashing a left-footed strike into the roof of the net to make it 2-1. The goal became the third-fastest scored in extra time in World Cup history.

Cape Verde refused to surrender. In the 103rd minute, Sydney Cabral stunned the football world with a spectacular equaliser. Receiving a pass from Yannick Semedo, he cut inside Mac Allister before curling a magnificent effort from the edge of the area beyond Emiliano Martínez and into the top corner to level the score at 2-2.

The stadium fell silent as the underdogs once again drew level. Moments later, Vozinha kept Cape Verde alive by making another brilliant save to deny Messi.

Just as the match appeared destined for a penalty shootout, the decisive moment arrived in the 111th minute. Messi delivered another dangerous corner, and Cristian Romero glanced a header across goal. The ball struck Cape Verde defender Dine Borges, took a cruel deflection and looped past the helpless Vozinha into the far corner for an unfortunate own goal that restored Argentina’s lead at 3-2.

Cape Verde’s dreams were finally shattered by Borges’ own goal. Their last opportunity came when Yannick Semedo’s powerful long-range effort narrowly missed the target, leaving the African side agonisingly short of forcing penalties.

Argentina eventually progressed to the quarter-finals, but the reigning world champions were made to work relentlessly for victory against an inspired Cape Verde side that earned widespread admiration with its fearless performance.
