Tuchel Challenges Rashford to Fulfill “No Limits” Potential as England Eyes World Cup Spot

Tuchel warns Rashford not to end career disappointed

RIGA, LATVIA – England manager Thomas Tuchel has challenged forward Marcus Rashford to seize his career opportunity, stating there are “no limits” to the 27-year-old’s potential but warning him not to end his career thinking “what could have been.”

Rashford, currently on a season-long loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, has shown flashes of his quality, with three goals and five assists in 10 games for the Spanish champions. He was recalled to the national squad seven months ago despite a recent absence from international duty.

During a news conference on Monday, Tuchel was blunt about the player’s situation. “It’s not a question of talent, it’s a question of whether he can prove the point at club and international level,” he said. “He has the potential – but potential is a dangerous word with high-level sports.”

Tuchel’s comments reflect a desire for the forward to consistently perform at the highest level, an issue that has led to a strained relationship with his parent club. Rashford’s struggles at Manchester United saw him fall out of favor, and his loan spell at Barcelona is seen as a crucial step to getting his career back on track.

The Challenge of Consistency
Tuchel pointed out that Rashford is still young enough to make the right choices, “because otherwise, he will be disappointed in 10 years at what could have been and what he made of it.”

The manager’s words echo recent criticism of the forward’s attitude. In January, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim openly criticized Rashford for not showing the commitment of someone “giving the maximum every day.”

Despite this, Tuchel remains optimistic about the forward’s raw ability. “He can be one of the best in the world because the quality I see in training, the finishing with both legs and with the head,” Tuchel said. “He is explosive, he is fast, he is strong in the air, so where are the limits? There are no limits—but the numbers don’t reach the potential, it is as easy as that.”

Barcelona’s boss Hansi Flick has been more direct in his praise, calling Rashford “unbelievable,” and the Spanish club has the option to make the loan permanent for £30m in 2026.

England’s Unbeaten Run and World Cup Hopes
The discussion of Rashford’s future comes as England prepares to face Latvia in Riga on Tuesday, with a win guaranteeing qualification for next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Tuchel’s tenure as head coach, which began on January 1, has had its critics. The team was jeered after a labored win against Andorra in June and suffered a bruising 3-1 friendly defeat by Senegal. However, England remains undefeated in its qualifying campaign, showing promising signs with a 5-0 thrashing of Serbia and a 3-0 victory against Wales.

“It’s a pleasure to coach, a pleasure to watch at the moment,” Tuchel said, expressing satisfaction with his team’s performance against Wales. “We are getting there. There is always room for improvement, but it looks good at the moment.”
