RIGA, LATVIA — England officially booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico after a comprehensive 5-0 away victory over Latvia in Riga on Tuesday.
Captain Harry Kane delivered a masterclass, scoring twice to ensure Thomas Tuchel’s side will finish top of Qualifying Group K with two games to spare. England become the first European nation to rubber-stamp their passage to the finals, marking their ninth successive appearance in a major tournament.
The result underscores an impeccable qualifying campaign for the Three Lions. England boasts a maximum 18 points from six games, having scored 18 goals while maintaining a perfect clean sheet record with zero goals conceded.
The scoring started in the 25th minute when Anthony Gordon cut in from the left flank to fire home past Latvian keeper Krisjanis Zviedris. The hosts, ranked 137th in the world, were punished just before halftime as Kane netted a swift double:
He drilled home after Latvia’s defense was caught trying to play out from the back.He converted a penalty after being fouled in the area, extending his record tally of England goals to 76.
The second half brought two more goals, with Maksims Tonisevs turning a Djed Spence cross into his own net in the 57th minute, and substitute Eberechi Eze wrapping up the comfortable win with a sweetly struck fifth goal late on.Speaking after the match, a satisfied Harry Kane praised the squad’s consistent effort. “Another tournament, we make it look easy but we have to fully focus on every game,” Kane told ITV Sport. “It doesn’t matter who we play, it’s about setting a high standard and keeping the momentum.”
German manager Thomas Tuchel hailed his players for their mentality. “A top performance, a top result, six wins, six clean sheets, so very happy,” the manager said, celebrating his completed remit to reach the finals. “We have been dominant in games and hungry. We are on our way.”
The manager specifically highlighted the team’s high-press and physical style, noting that “everyone buys into it. It’s a pleasure to coach them.”While tougher tests await in their bid to win their first major men’s trophy since 1966, England’s qualification record is formidable. The team is now unbeaten in their last 37 World Cup qualifiers dating back to 2009. Including Euros qualifiers, their unbeaten streak stands at a remarkable 57 matches since 2015.
The ease of their run is highlighted by the fact that they have faced only two shots on target in six games, with keeper Jordan Pickford making a key save to secure a record-extending ninth successive clean sheet.
In Group K, Albania sits second on 11 points, followed by Serbia on 10, with Latvia trailing on 5. England will round off their campaign in November with a home clash against Serbia and a final visit to Albania.
