Chelsea’s Red Card Woes Stall Title Push as Maresca Misses Key Opportunity

Chelsea’s aspirations of challenging for the Premier League title are being severely undermined not by a lack of quality, but by an alarming lack of discipline. The dismissal of midfielder Moises Caicedo in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against leaders Arsenal marks the fourth time a Chelsea player has been sent off in just 13 Premier League games this season.

This persistent disciplinary issue is proving incredibly costly. In the three key matches where Chelsea have been reduced to 10 men for a significant period—against Manchester United, Brighton, and now Arsenal—they have managed to scrape together just one point from a possible nine.

While the Blues can take some pride in their resilience against Arsenal, fighting back to secure a point despite being shorthanded, manager Enzo Maresca will likely view the home draw as an opportunity missed to genuinely close the gap on the table toppers.

The contrast with their rivals, Arsenal, is stark. Just last season, the Gunners were plagued by ill-discipline, dropping points in three of their first eight games, all of which followed a red card. This season, however, Mikel Arteta’s side has shown remarkable improvement.

Arsenal has kept 11 men on the pitch in all 20 games across all competitions so far this campaign. While they accumulated six yellow cards in the feisty London derby on Sunday, their ability to maintain composure is a key factor in their current Premier League dominance.

Despite Sunday’s draw placing them second in the table, Chelsea’s title credentials remain questionable. Their issues extend beyond red cards and include glaring inconsistency, such as the unexpected 2-1 home defeat by Sunderland where discipline was not a factor.

The question remains: Can they win the Premier League? Yes, but only if they address both their tendency to receive red cards and their intermittent performance dips.
