LOS ANGELES : As the highly anticipated second season of Prime Video’s Fallout approaches, star Walton Goggins is sharing deep insights into the character he embodies, The Ghoul (formerly Cooper Howard), suggesting the character’s struggle is deeply reflective of real-world anxieties.
Goggins, a three-time Emmy nominee, revealed that he spent “a lot more time” exploring Cooper Howard’s origin story in the upcoming season. He explained to Deadline that Cooper’s journey—a man watching his world teeter on the edge of nuclear war—makes him “a reflection of all of us.”
“He has no control over the information that is coming to him, and he’s understanding in real time the world that he thought he knew no longer exists,” Goggins said. “And he’s just like any reasonable person trying to make sense out of something that can’t make sense.”
Season 2 will see The Ghoul continue his dangerous journey toward New Vegas alongside Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) in the future timeline. Simultaneously, Cooper’s past will reveal the nuclear conspiracy that shattered civilization and birthed the current dystopia.
While discussing the show’s political undertones, Goggins praised the writers for avoiding overt preaching, noting that the series uses “absurdity and we do it with satire” to address real-world consequences.
The actor quoted co-star Aaron Moten with a line that resonated deeply: “Everyone in this show wants to change the world. They just have a different how.”
Goggins clarified that this sentiment acts as the “pole position” for the show’s core message, drawing parallels to today’s political landscape. While all the “warring factions” in the wasteland—from the Brotherhood to the Vault Dwellers—strive to rebuild society, they simply have divergent ideas about the solution.
He added that The Ghoul is unique as the “only loner here. He just wants to be with his family,” while other groups are busy trying to “remake it the way that you want to see it run,” mirroring the formation of political parties after a real-world calamity.
Fallout Season 2 premieres on December 17 on Prime Video, with new episodes available to stream every Wednesday.
