LONDON: In one of the most unexpected music revivals of the year, Jess Glynne’s 2015 chart-topper, “Hold My Hand,” has been crowned the UK’s TikTok Song of the Year. The track’s newfound fame is thanks entirely to the viral “nothing beats a Jet2holiday” trend, where users pair the upbeat song with videos of holiday fails, travel chaos, and comical mishaps.
The song, which originally marked Glynne’s first solo number one a decade ago, soundtracked an incredible 6.6 million videos on the platform this year, following its earlier success as TikTok’s UK and global Song of the Summer.
Jess Glynne, 36, told BBC Newsbeat she “feels blessed” by the unexpected honour. “It’s the most amazing feeling knowing that 10 years later a song that means so much to me… to be able to celebrate again and again throughout this year—has been insane,” she said.
The British singer admitted the trend has given “Hold My Hand” a “new lease of life” and made it one of her favourite tracks to perform due to the sheer “joy” it now carries.
Glynne even shared a personal connection to the viral hit, recalling a moment when she heard her own song echoing over the plane airways during a Jet2 holiday to Corfu with her family.
Despite the song being inescapable across social media, Glynne’s personal feed is more focused on cooking videos, cat compilations, and clips of people falling down. However, she admitted her favourite versions of the Jet2 trend are those where parents get their children to say the famous voiceover line, or the all-time winner: a man who opened his hotel room curtain to find a “really tiny” window that looked like a “prison cell.”
Glynne now sees social media as an “amazing way to engage with people,” especially noting how the trend has helped the song reconnect with a younger generation who are hearing it for the first time.
