American Actor Detained in Japan for Drug Possession

Darwin, 10 December: American actor and playwright Jeremy O. Harris has been detained in Japan for possessing illegal drugs. On November 16, he was taken into custody at Okinawa’s Naha Airport after arriving from the United States.

A spokesperson for the Okinawa Regional Customs Office confirmed his detention.
According to Reuters, Japanese customs agents found less than one gram of MDMA in Harris’s luggage. The 36-year-old actor has reportedly been held in police custody for nearly three weeks on drug possession charges.

It is known that Harris was visiting Japan for personal reasons. He began his journey in the United Kingdom, made a stopover in Taiwan, and then flew to Japan.
An officer at Tomigusuku Police Station told Reuters that Harris has remained in custody since his arrest, but declined to comment on whether the actor has admitted to the allegations. Customs officials filed formal charges on Thursday.

Japan has some of the strictest drug laws among developed nations. Even small amounts of illegal substances can lead to long prison sentences and harsh penalties. Due to its zero-tolerance policy, many foreign nationals have previously served jail time for similar offenses.

Jeremy O. Harris rose to prominence in 2018 with Slave Play, which was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. He has also worked as a producer on HBO’s Euphoria. His acting credits include Gossip Girl and What We Do in the Shadows.
