DUNDEE : Author and comedian David Walliams has been officially dropped from the 2025 Waterstones Children’s Book Festival. The announcement follows a decision by his publisher, HarperCollins, to cut ties with the author on Friday amid allegations of inappropriate behavior toward young women.
Walliams, who has sold over 60 million books worldwide, has been removed from the official speakers’ list for the festival, which is scheduled to take place in Dundee, Lincoln, and Taunton.
Waterstones Statement A spokesperson for the British book chain confirmed the move to the BBC, stating: “HarperCollins have confirmed that David Walliams will no longer be appearing at our festival in Dundee.” The festival will proceed with other high-profile authors, including Cressida Cowell (How to Train Your Dragon) and Liz Pichon (Tom Gates).
Walliams Issues Strong Denial The author has “strongly denied” the allegations. A spokesperson for Walliams stated that he had never been officially informed of any complaints by his publisher and was not given the opportunity to answer questions as part of an investigation.
“David strongly denies that he has behaved inappropriately and is taking legal advice,” the spokesperson added.
HarperCollins and BBC Response HarperCollins stated they take employee wellbeing “extremely seriously” but declined to comment on internal matters to respect the privacy of individuals.
The BBC has confirmed that while Walliams will still appear on a pre-recorded episode of Would I Lie to You? on Boxing Day, the broadcaster has “no future projects directly involving” the star.
