BIRMINGHAM : The world’s longest-running radio soap opera, The Archers, has officially reached its 75th anniversary, marking the milestone by bringing a “lost” piece of broadcasting history back to life.
To celebrate three-quarters of a century on the airwaves, the current cast has re-enacted the opening scene of the very first episode, which originally aired on January 1, 1951. Because the original recording did not survive the decades, actors including Timothy Bentinck and Felicity Finch stepped into the shoes of the original Dan and Doris Archer to recreate the historic moment at Brookfield Farm.
Editor Jeremy Howe noted the unique bond between the show and its audience, highlighting that characters like Tony Archer—the first baby born in the series—have literally lived their entire lives within the fictional village of Ambridge.
“What is brilliant is that the programme continues to attract new listeners and appeal to a whole new generation,” Howe said in a statement. “It has timeless appeal, and yet it manages to speak to the times we live in today.”

As part of the celebrations, the current cast re-recorded the opening scene from the first ever episode.
Radio 4 has cleared its schedule for a day of tribute, including:
A 45-minute special broadcast in installments throughout New Year’s Day.
Hosted by Emma Freud, making its debut on the main Radio 4 channel.
Special editions of Woman’s Hour and This Week in History dedicated to the enduring legacy of rural England’s most famous village.
While the anniversary celebrations look to the past, the current storyline remains as gripping as ever. Fans were left reeling from a New Year’s Eve cliffhanger involving a dramatic attack in the village. Thursday evening’s episode is expected to reveal the culprit, proving that despite its “vintage” status, the drama in Ambridge is far from slowing down.
