Darwin, 13 November –
The Russian government on Wednesday lost a legal case in Australia’s High Court over its bid to build a new embassy less than a kilometer from the country’s Parliament House.
According to AFP, reporting from Sydney, the site—located about 400 meters from the parliamentary area—had been leased to Russia in 2008 for 99 years after it paid nearly $2 million. However, in 2023, the lease was canceled after Parliament passed a law aimed at preventing the embassy project from moving forward.
The move led to years of legal disputes between the two countries, with lawyers representing Moscow arguing that the law was unconstitutional.
Then–Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government had received “very clear security advice” from Canberra’s intelligence agencies about “the risk of a new Russian presence so close to Parliament House.”
On Wednesday, the High Court upheld the validity of the law.
However, it also ruled that the Australian government must compensate Russia.
