Darwin, 01 May: It has been revealed that the happiest place to live in Australia is not a glamorous waterfront or coastal town, but rather the green and tranquil suburb of Sutherland, located south of Sydney.
Situated approximately 26 kilometers from Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD), this area has been ranked as the most livable location in a new national survey.
The iSelect research ranked 88 regions across Australia based on 10 key factors related to livability, including employment, housing affordability, economic security, health, safety, environment, and social cohesion.
As a result, it has been found that residents are not only living in an expensive area, but they are also leading a high-quality lifestyle.
Sutherland secured the top spot due to factors such as low unemployment, strong social bonds, and easy access to both coastal and green spaces. However, the livability comes at a price—according to Domain data, the average cost of a three-bedroom home in Sutherland is 1.3 million dollars, while the average price of a two-bedroom unit is 823,000 dollars.

Adelaide Central and Hills secured second place due to its short commute times, excellent healthcare services, and good work-life balance.
Meanwhile, Sydney’s Northern Beaches earned third place, thanks to its coastal lifestyle, green spaces, and flexible working hours.
The Hills District and Hawkesbury were close behind in fourth place, with Inner Perth rounding out the top five.
The survey also highlighted Australia’s least livable areas. North Moreton Bay in Queensland was ranked the least livable region. It was followed by Ipswich and Logan-Beaudesert, areas with high unemployment, long commute times, high crime rates, and poor health outcomes, which contributed to their low rankings.
iSelect’s Head of Health, Andres Gutierrez, stated, “The research shows that where we live can have a significant impact on our physical and mental health.”
He further explained, “Access to healthcare, proximity to green spaces or beaches, convenient transportation, and opportunities for social connection can all influence daily stress levels and overall quality of life.”
Gutierrez added, “Areas that support these factors help residents maintain better long-term health and well-being.”
This research is expected to have a significant impact on how livability and health outcomes are viewed in different regions of Australia, creating new insights into various areas of the country.
